Kamado grills are little known here in Europe, but in the United States they are a highly prized type of grill, due to their unique way of grilling meat, over low heat and temperatures, for hours if desired.
From its name and shape, you might have guessed that its origins aren't American, but rather Eastern. And that's true.
Kamado barbecues originate in China and are traditionally made of ceramic. In fact, only those made of high-quality ceramic can be considered "kamados." This is an ancient design, used generation after generation.
However, the kamado has two drawbacks: its fragility and its heavy weight. The Keg 5000 eliminates these problems, using lightweight fiberglass insulation encased in steel for protection and placing it on a wheeled stand for easy transport.
The basic construction of the Broil King Keg 5000 is a solid base made of double-walled, highly insulated steel. This technologically advanced design encapsulates the heat within, creating highly efficient convection, allowing it to maintain temperature for up to two hours after the lid is closed and the heat is turned off.
The efficiency of this unit means that you'll need a very small amount of charcoal to light the grill, which can reach temperatures of up to 400°C.
To place the food, it has a cast iron grate that can be easily raised (hot or cold) to remove it or place it closer to or further from the coal.
Thus, the Keg 5000 can be a charcoal barbecue, an oven, or a smoker, depending on the amount of charcoal used and the opening of the ventilation valves , located at the top and bottom of the barbecue, which you can regulate with the help of the multi-function tool, which is included.
The only thing you won't be able to do on the Keg is set up two cooking zones, a technique easily achieved on other charcoal grills by stacking charcoal to one side to create a direct and indirect zone simultaneously.
Remember, this charcoal barbecue's specialty is slow-roasted pieces, so the meat is so tender it falls off the bone. The spectacular roasts you get with the Keg more than make up for not having two cooking zones. It's simply not comparable.
The Keg 5000 comes fully equipped with stands, shelves, a multi-tool, and up to two bottle openers.
Its new lower ash disposal tray is reminiscent of Weber's One-Touch system. It's very easy to clean and empty without coming into contact with the ashes.
